“Living in a community with quality K through 12 educational systems improves the odds of going to college, which matters because almost without exception, higher socioeconomic status leads to better health outcomes,” says Dawne Mouzon, PhD, MPH, Associate Professor at the Rutgers Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy.
Those with college degrees are more likely to have higher-paying jobs, which, in turn, are also more likely to offer health insurance. “Those with higher levels of quality education also tend to have better health literacy, which makes it easier for them to understand and therefore act upon basic health-related information,” Mouzon adds.
Case-in-Point: Springing from ARDX’s community initiatives within our education systems, Envision Lead Grow (ELG) is now a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a vision to transform communities of poverty into communities of prosperity through the promise of middle school girls becoming entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 2017, ELG has reached more than 2,149 middle school girls in 48 states with the support of over 10,000 local volunteer hours through summer camps, mentoring, webinars, app-a-thons, and conferences focusing on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) infused with entrepreneurship, leadership, college preparation, and workforce development.
